Lowdown Brass Band Release a Funky Party Single and Discuss Promoting Music Education

Written by on April 25, 2019

Lowdown Brass Band

Fans of New Orleans style brass bands, look no further than Lowdown Brass Band from right here in Chicago. The 10-piece band has been carrying the Second Line tradition for over 15 years with their deeply infectious blend of Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop and Funk. Their new Single “We Dem Boys” is especially groove-heavy. According to front man Dave Levine, the band wanted to channel James Brown but with their own modern twist: “The real spirit of that song is that we would like to bring the party, have a good time in an all-inclusive way, and spread infectious joy that we get from being lucky enough to be able to have a career in music and reach people with it.”

But Lowdown Brass Band is not just about the party. The band has taken on an educational mission of promoting music education in a city where arts funding often gets swept to the side. For some years, LDB has been visiting class rooms and teaching about the traditions of New Orleans Jazz and Brass Bands, the history of Second Line music and its ties to French and Spanish colonial era. Jill Hopkins spoke with Dave Levine about their educational efforts and, of course, new music.
