Written by on August 17, 2022

Let the countdown begin, as we celebrate the seventh edition of Ruido Fest, one of the biggest festivities of Latinx alternative music in the United States, taking place next weekend at Union Park in Chicago’s Near West Side.

This year, ruidos@s from the Midwest and beyond will enjoy a three-day bill of international, national and local acts with a highly-curated mix of rock, pop, electrónica, hip-hop y otros sonidos representativos de nuestra identidad.

As part of our yearly Pa’l Ruido Fest, Rocío Santos and Jesús Echeverría take you on a series of conversations with artistas that you won’t want to miss during Ruido Fest 2022, taking place on August 19 through 21.

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

Saturday at Ruido Stage, 8 p.m.

You’ve probably sang your heart out to “El matador,” and so many hits by one of the most iconic Latin-American rock bands founded in Argentina in the mid-1980s. We missed them last year due to a travel-related cancellation; finally, we’ll get to celebrate with Los Fabulosos Cadillacs headlining Saturday at Ruido Fest. Sr. Flavio, composer, bassist and founding member, speaks about the band’s current spirit, the possibility of a new album, memories of their first shows in México and the United States, and many anecdotes of their long-term trajectory.

Elis Paprika

Saturday at Ruido Stage, 3:30 p.m.

What would Ruido be without the presence of mujeres del rock? Elis Paprika is undoubtedly one of the nonstop musicians and activists of alternative music in México. She’s a DYI singer, composer, guitarist, and founder and director of the feminist cultural organization Now Girls Rule. She looks back on her early days starting in music in Guadalajara, and looking up to people like Rita Guerrero (Santa Sabina), Ely Guerra, Elis Regina, and other musicians. She also relives her tours in Asia through funny anecdotes about language and culture.

Cuco

Friday at Ruido Stage, 8:45 p.m.

One of the most successful and young Chicano pop artists is headlining Friday at Ruido Fest. Has the journey been challenging for the California-born musician? Cuco reflects on recentering his life as a 24th year-old, and finding a community through collaboration in Mexico City while recording his latest album Fantasy Gateway. Cuco also reminisces on singing, breakdancing and visiting México as a kid, which has influenced his sound merging the past, present and future.

Immasoul

Saturday at Noise Stage, 2 p.m.

Let’s decentralize our ears, and hear what el Caribe mexicano has to offer the R&B spectrum. Get to know Immasoul, a multifaceted Afro-Mexican singer-songwriter and poet who takes us on a recorrido through her Black roots, and her commitment to women’s empowerment through music.

Mengers

Saturday at Noise Stage, 3 p.m.

Mengers is definitely one of the acts that will help purge ourselves of the darkest moments we’ve experienced during this pandemic. Mexico City’s most notable rock trio founded by brothers Carlos and Pablo Calderón, two scientists and musicians, spoke to us about their debut in Chicago, and their take at incorporating an electronic music perspective for their upcoming album i/O.

George Arthur Calendar

Sunday at Noise Stage, 2 p.m.

We’ve witnessed the growth of Guadalajara-born/Chicago-based musician George Arthur Calendar known for his suave-velvety-synth pop con una huella de funk, soul and other genres. This alchemist of lo-fi and psychedelia sounds speaks about his latest single, his post-break-up album Paradox, and his sound palette ranging from José Alfredo Jiménez, David Bowie, Rigo Tovar, George Michael, Porter, and more.
