118 plays

barbershopshow:

This installment of the Barber Shop Show is our Mid-Month Mash Up, where we check-in with our favorite local journalists and bloggers. They tell us about recent developments in the news that they liked and ones that they disliked. Then they tell us those moments that made them go WTF!?!

Among other stories, this week we talked about the mass layoffs of Sun-Times Photographers, what’s going on in Uptown, and a study that suggests that it may be better to want expensive things… but not to actually get them.

We were joined by:
Jen Sabella of DNAinfo Chicago
Yana Kunichoff of the Chicago Reporter
and
Yolanda Perdomo of WBEZ

The Barber Shop Show airs live from Carter’s Barber Shop in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood on Fridays at Noon (CST) with a rebroadcast Saturdays at Noon. http:/vocalo.org 89.5fm (NWI/CHI) and 90.7fm (CHI).

On Friday’s Barber Shop Show, we update two stories from the current issue of The Chicago Reporter.  The stories highlight how gun legislation is impacting communities. The Reporter’s own Angela Caputo tackles one facet of this issue: she spoke with Pamela Bosley, a community member fighting for stricter gun laws in Illinois. Reporter James Reddick wrote about the other side of this: he spoke with Colleen Lawson, who is fighting for the right of law-abiding citizens in Chicago to carry guns.

Both Colleen and Pamela will join us at the shop to talk law, order, and solutions to end violence. We’ll also be joined by Angela Caputo and Youth Organizer Lamar Johnson.

Barber Shop Show 124: By the Way, Meet Vera Stark
161 plays

barbershopshow:

This month, the Goodman Theatre is presenting “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark”, a Lynn Nottage play inspired by black actresses of the past who never got their due.

Much of the play takes place in the 1930s: the beginning of the Golden Age of Hollywood. But Hollywood was a very cold place for starlets who happened to be brown.

In “Meet Vera Stark”, we get an inside look at life a fictional black actress who has to make a choice about what she’s willing to do to be a star.
We were joined at the shop by two actresses from the production:
• Amelia Workman, who plays Anna Mae and Afua, and
• TaRon Patton, who plays Lottie and Carmen.

Also joining us was the director of the play, Chuck Smith.

We also hear a clip from Richard’s 1984 interview with the incomparable Lena Horne about what it was like for aspiring black stars in the early days of Hollywood.

The Barber Shop Show is hosted by WBEZ’s Richard Steele. It airs live from Carter’s Barber Shop in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood on Fridays at Noon (CST) with a rebroadcast Saturdays at Noon. vocalo.org 89.5fm (NWI/CHI) and 90.7fm (CHI).

Barber Shop Show 122: Shop Talk, Education and Sports Updates
155 plays

barbershopshow:

On this installment of the Barber Shop Show, we updated two local stories that are probably being talked about at barber shops all over town: pending CPS closures and local sports.

This week, independent hearing officers reviewed Chicago Public Schools’ list of 54 slated closings. They oppose 13 of the proposed closings, saying those schools don’t meet state standards that warrant a shutdown. In addition to this, more and more questions are being raised about the savings CPS has projected from the closures.

Joining us at the shop to update us on all this was: WBEZ’s Linda Lutton

Later in the show, we got an update on what’s going on in local sports, particularly baseball and basketball. For that, we were joined by:

· WBEZ Sports Analyst Cheryl Rae Stout

· and Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune

…as well as a couple of folks at the shop getting their hair cut.

Coming to you live each Friday at Noon from Carter’s Barber Shop in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, The Barber Shop Show is your weekly dose of real talk, straight from the shop floor. No punches are pulled and no topic is considered off-topic. Hosted by WBEZ’s Richard Steele. Produced by Ayana Contreras and Engineered by Sarah Lu.
The Barber Shop Show airs on Vocalo.org 89.5fm (NWI/CHI) and 90.7fm (CHI).

barbershopshow:

On this installment of the Barber Shop Show, we talked about the changes impacting riders of the CTA, including the Red Line south of Roosevelt being shut down until October 2013. There’s also a lot of changes around the new Ventra card, and the Jeffrey Jump (and early foray into high speed bus service). We also hear about proposed changes to bus service on 31st Street, that could impact residents in Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Armour Square, and Little Village.

Will all these changes amount to better, faster more reliable public transit in Chicago?

Joining us at the shop:
• Jon Hilkevitch, Transportation Reporter for the Chicago Tribune,

• Claudia Ayala, a Public Transit and Enviromental Justice activist with the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.

• and Brenna Conway, Campaign Manager at the Active Transportation Alliance.
