Reclaimed Soul: Funky Funky Bacharach
29 plays

vocaloreclaimedsoul:

The melody for 1967’s Bacharach/David classic “The Look of Love” was inspired by Bond Girl Ursula Andress; and that iconic melody has inspired countless artists to record their own versions of the song. Reclaimed Soul’s Ayana Contreras brings us a selection of soulful vintage covers of “The Look of Love”. Plus, we hear groovy covers of other Bacharach compositions, as well (like “Walk on By” and “I Say a Little Prayer”).

Vocalo on WBEZ Ep. 102 - Online Harassment, Rebel Diaz, DJ Carlos Feliciano

In this episode: As the news editor for Giant Bomb, a video game news and reviews site, Patrick Klepek has received his share of online harassment, from the comments to Twitter to his personal email. But he’s a white dude in a position of influence. What kind of harassment do less established writers and people in the community particularly women and minorities face? Klepek talked to Brian and Molly about his recent work to call attention to toxic conversations online and how to make the Internet a (slightly) nicer place.

Chicago born but currently based out of the Bronx, Rebel Diaz, have recently released their full length debut album, Radical Dilemma, an album that touches on the group’s frustration with U.S policy, its immigration policy, classism, racism and social justice. The duo joined Jesse Menendez in studio to talk about the album and the importance of youth mentoring in their community.

The “adventure soul” duo M&O (formerly Milo and Otis) have been making music together for a number of years and have honed in on a sound that’s both groovy and warm in production, and socially conscious and poignant in its lyrical content. This performance and interview was recorded live in our own Jim and Kay Mabie performance studio.

We conclude the show with the usual - a killer DJ set. Carlos Feliciano has more than 20 years of experience as a DJ under his belly. Heavily influenced by Chicago’s long standing house culture, Carlos’s sound selection epitomizes the city’s love affair with the genre. So much so that he won Vocalo’s most recent house quest DJ battle and become a member of Vocalo’s esteemed DJ collective. This next set showcases Carlos’s house sensibilities.
