Lightfoils on Live From Studio 10 - 7/22

Building upon the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, Chicago’s Lightfoils carry forth the dreampop / shoegaze traditions of creating rich, noisy soundscapes with ethereal vocals. But to that they add killer groovy bass riffs and steady textured beats. We’re excited to welcome the band in our studio to play songs off their new full-length Hierarchy.

Tune in Tuesday, 7/22 at 8pm CT on 90.7 FM (CHI) / 89.5 FM (NWI) / www.vocalo.org/player

Vocalo on WBEZ Ep. 110 - Cowboys And Indies, Iggy Azalea and cultural appropriation, DJ David Sabat

In this episode: “Cowboys and Indies - The Epic History of the Record Industry,” is being called the first definitive history on both sides of the Atlantic. The book covers more than 100 years and, among other things, it looks to demonstrate that to truly understand the industry’s future we must be knowledgeable of its past. Jesse Menendez spoke with the book’s author Gareth Murphy.

Also: Its safe to say Iggy Azalea is one of the country’s biggest pop stars. Her song Fancy has been atop the Billboard Top 100 chart for the last 18 weeks. Which is great but not without controversy. See, Iggy is White and speaks in an Australian accent but when she raps she affects what some have called a “Blaccent.” Some, like journalist and cultural commentator Derrick Clifton are calling it an act of cultural appropriation. He joined Jesse Menendez to discuss his recent article for the Daily Dot called, “How to Talk to White People About Iggy Azalea.”

Finally, we close the show as always with some music. This time, the mix comes from DJ David Sabat. Tune in!
