practicallyspeaking-vocalo:

On today’s Practically Speaking, host Audra Wilson talks to Pastor Phil Jackson of Lawndale Community Church. Everybody at the church is trying to practice being good neighbors by making their neighborhood (Chicago’s North Lawndale) a better place to live for everyone.

Plus, we hear about Lady Terror, a poet who practices therapeutic performance performances: like jumping on a soapbox in front of Harold’s Chicken and reciting poetry through a bullhorn. She’s trying to voice her concerns about the problems in her community.

Today at 1pm on 90.7fm, 89.5fm, and vocalo.org.

You can also catch a rebroadcast on Friday at 11am (right after Friday’s extended Morning AMp).

Overdrive Interview: The Dollhouse Reading Series

vocalooverdrive:

The Dollhouse Reading Series takes the conventional poetry reading and personalizes it: the event takes place in the curators’ living room. Anyone can attend, and the event is free and BYOB. Vocalo Overdrive intern Karis Hustad stopped by the reading on a chilly February night to catch up with the curators and hosts, and to find out what goes down when you open your doors to friends and strangers all in the name of poetry (and a little PBR).

Yesssir (and Ma’am). Ayana Contreras plays cuts from this rare LP tonight on Reclaimed Soul. The record, 1971’s “A Sun Lady for all Seasons Reads Her Poetry” by world-renowned poet Sonia Sanchez not only features the poet reading some of her best known works, it also featured her giving context to the pieces.

For example, to introduce her poem called “Black Magic”, she states:

“There’s a singer who is not really too political, but every now and then he says something in a song and in one of his songs he was saying about like we oughta jump back and kiss ourselves”…

That singer was James Brown. She continues,

“… And so I say to you, black people. we ought to start a five year plan of kissing ourselves - just jumping back and kissing ourselves, and then we gonna believe that we is bad, been bad, and we gonna get badder.”

Sonia Sanchez

All that, plus Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Lotus Palace, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Labelle, Howlin Wolf, and much, much more…

Reclaimed Soul. Tonight at 8pm CST on 89.5fm, 90.7fm in Chicago, and vocalo.org.
