Secret Colours on Live From Studio 10 - 4/8

Chicago’s Secret Colours have been generating a national buzz around the release of their 2-part album Positive Distractions and their sound steeped in 60’s psychedelia and 90’s Britpop. With new album and mostly new members, comes a new fresh approach to songwriting but there’s still plenty of reverb on jangly guitar riffs and spacey organ sounding keys to make it one of Secret Colours’ best.

We’re pleased to welcome the band for a live set and conversation about the new album and their new collective.

Tune in Tues. 4/8 at 8 PM CT on 90.7 FM (CHI) / 89.5 FM (NWI) or stream at www.vocalo.org/player

Redgrave on Live From Studio 10 (aired March 2014)

What started as Angie Mead and a series of iPod demo recordings on a broken down acoustic guitar, has evolved into a distorted wall of driving garage rock songs. When drummer Stephen Howard joined the fray, the sound was fleshed out and a great debut EP called National Act followed. Now Chicago duo Redgrave is ready to unleash new material over the course of this year in a series of digitally released singles.

Live From Studio 10 airs Tuesdays at 8pm CST on Vocalo 90.7 FM (CHI) / 89.5 FM (NWI) and Vocalo.org, and features emerging local bands and music artists (with an occasional national act stopping by). Model Stranger on Live From Studio 10 (aired March 2014)

Model Stranger have always prided themselves on their frenetic live shows. It’s that raw energy that’s often present in their recorded work. But when it came time to record their latest, they took a different approach. On their new EP, The Changing Score, the rock trio has given “the studio” a chance, and the result is 4 incredibly well-produced anthemic pop rock tracks.

Live From Studio 10 airs Tuesdays at 8pm CST on Vocalo 90.7 FM (CHI) / 89.5 FM (NWI) and Vocalo.org, and features emerging local bands and music artists (with an occasional national act stopping by). The Flips on Live From Studio 10 (aired Jan 2014)

Chicago’s indie rock quintet The Flips are known for earnest songs that tackle themes of faith, religion and identity through contemplative self-reflection and at times, outright anger and frustration. Vocalo on WBEZ Ep 92 - Chicago Drill Scene, Expunging Juvy Records, North by North
102 plays

In this episode: In a new documentary series called Chiraq, Vice’s music site Noisey, gives us a glimpse of Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood and its burgeoning and sometimes violent drill scene. The documentary also explores the social and cultural challenges facing the community. Chiraq host Thomas Morton spoke with MusicVox host Jesse Menendez and Kristian Eliz about the documentary.

Also: Even without any arrests before you turn 18, juvenile records can affect future employment, and access to housing and education. But with a little time, money, and know how, juvenile records can be expunged in Illinois. Mikva Challenge’s Juvenile Justice Council has developed a web-based app to walk people through the process and Chris Rudd, Director of the JJC talks with Molly and Brian on The MorningAMp about how they hope to expand its reach.

Also Also: Chicago’s gritty blues rock trio North by North have done something very ambitious with their debut LP- they made it an 18 track double album, and believe it or not, every track sounds as catchy and energetic and the other. You’ll find no fillers here. The band joined Jesse Menendez in our performance studio for a live set and conversation about the new album Something Wicked.

Last but not least: DJ Daz brings it home with a bomb of a live mix!! Tune in!
