Vocalo On WBEZ Ep 94 - Legislators and Prison Visits, Black Radio in Communities, Milo and Otis

In this episode: The Department of Corrections has a $1.3 billion annual budget so our sister station WBEZ gave a survey to Illinois legislators to find out how many of them had actually visited a prison during their tenure. Reporter Rob Wildeboer joined us to break down the results and explain why it’s always good to do your research.

Also, Reclaimed Soul host Ayana Contreras sits down with dancer/choreographer Kyle Abraham, who was in town with his troupe, Abraham.in.motion. They were here to perform his “Radio Show” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Kyle and Ayana talked about the role of Black Radio in communities. They also talked about social dancing, from disco to breaking to voguing.

Chicago duo Milo and Otis have developed a unique take on R’n’B, a style they’ve come to call “adventure soul.” Vocalist, Jamila Woods joined Jesse Menendez on The MusicVox and talked about their current album The Joy, and some of the social commentary that appears on it, specifically, the impact of the passing of Troy Davis and a cultural taboo associated with wanting to touch a Black person’s hair.

Finally, we bring it home with an all vinyl mix about Chicago from Chicken George. Tune in!

In a short amount of time, North West Indiana’s Ready To Live has managed to generate a buzz with their brand of EDM-infused hip hop. Is The New Harlem Shake Disrespectful to Harlem?

vocalooverdrive:

The Harlem Shake internet dance craze is a far cry from the original dance developed in Harlem in the 1980s. Is the internet meme a disrespect to Harlem residents and culture? Does it speak to a deeper issue about race relations and culture clash in America? As Shantell says: ” I can definitely understand how residents can take offense. It goes way back to the long history of whites profiting off blacks.”
