Vocalo on WRTE-FM (Chicago)

On December 31st, 2012- Vocalo.org 89.5 FM will become a signal and several communities stronger as the Chicago Public Media family welcomes WRTE-FM.

WRTE 90.5 FM is a local community radio station nationally recognized for having impacted the lives of hundreds of youth and adults that went through it’s media training program, better known as Radio Arte.  Over the course of 15 years, Radio Arte served youth and Latino audiences with creative & community-oriented programming, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of it’s listeners.

Radio Arte will continue to broadcast online at radioarte.org and will soon unveil its new media training program-we’re looking forward to partnering with them on future endeavors!

Vocalo now has the honor of starting the next chapter of WRTE-FM’s on-air legacy with a commitment to serving underrepresented communities in Chicago.   We will start broadcasting on WRTE 90.5 FM this New Year’s Eve, and by the end of January, we will broadcast on a new frequency—WRTE 90.7 FM.

With our new frequency, new transmitter, and new antenna- we are going to double WRTE-FM’s existing coverage area.   That means that we will not only be heard in Little Village, but will now also be heard loud and clear in neighborhoods like Pilsen, Humboldt Park, Bridgeport , & Wicker Park.

Our programming on 89.5 and 90.7 will consist of existing Vocalo shows and new community-produced shows, plus we are excited to share that Sundays will be dedicated entirely to Vocalo en español (starting January 13th).  Vocalo’s current music programming consists of a unique mix of progressive Hip-Hop/Chicago House//R&B/Alternative and Indie everything. And now, Vocalo has added Latin Alternative music to its regular music rotation.

In keeping with the spirit of WRTE-FM’s community legacy, we’re going to open a community bureau in Pilsen/Little Village by Summer 2013 where we’ll be able extend our Vocalo storyteller trainings  to community members interested in joining our network.  If you’re a Radio Arte Alumni and want to continue collaborating with our programming, we’ve developed special RA Alumni Storytellers Workshops (led by Radio Arte alumni Adriana Gallardo) just for you.  Spread the word!

We’re excited about the future and for the opportunity to strengthen the voices of Chicago’s communities!   Questions, comments, pitches, concerns?  Contact our managing director, Silvia Rivera at silvia@vocalo.org.  Read her personal message here.
