The Rundown
Who do you admire, and why? Call up and let us know: (888) 635-1112.
It starts with music: We've been playing an old song on Vocalo called "Hot Topic," where the band Le Tigre give shout-outs to their heroes-- well, heroines, since feminism is the hot topic-- and a couple of my favorite new songs work some of the same territory, like "A Todos Ellos" from the Mexican Institute of Sound, and Angie Stone's "My People."
So we'll play those tunes-- and maybe a couple others along that line-- but why should those musicians get to have all the fun? Call up and give a shout-out to your heroes.
Meanwhile, some kids in Rogers Park on Chicago's North Side have been recording their own tunes and posting them to Vocalo under the name AllStarz. We'll hear some of their music and what they've got to say about it.
And we've got guests! In our first hour, Vocalista Sara.e.lu joins us to talk about Little Tree, rock climbing, her heroes, and your stuff.
And my buddy-- and hero-- Jesus Matta will join us for the second hour. Jesus is a performer with the Albany Park Theater Project, a group of young people from Chicago's Northwest Side who create original performances based on stories from their neighborhood. Jesus and his APTP comrades have a show opening this week, Aqui Estoy.
(Full disclosure: I'm one of APTP's official cheerleaders-in-chief-- I sit on their board. That's because they're my heroes. I think the world of their work and want everybody to know about it. Just so ya know.)
And in other news: We'll talk by phone with Mick Dumke, who covers local politics for the Chicago Reader, updating a Vocalo Media Circus story from October, when publishers of free newspapers objected to a new-ish (and little-noticed) city law that might-could have run some of them out of business. Apparently, the publishers paid a little visit to the City Council recently and played a game of Let's Make a Deal. Mick's got the scoop.
