The Rundown
First, the good news: Students at Wells High School in Chicago walked out of class around ten o'clock on a Thursday morning in early October... to demand the education they'd signed up for. "I'm supposed to be in an AP history class," said Michael Gonzales. "But I'm in classes I took freshman year!" He and a hundred or so of his classmates stood outside the school chanting "Fix our schedules!" -- and the alderman and school board officials showed up within an hour to get things straightened out. (I was there for part of the fun and talked with some kids and adults afterwards.)
Next, the bad news: Gary grabbed national headlines in September, when the bodies of two teens involved in a car accident were found by one of their parents, hours after they died. The investigation continues into why police did not find the boys when they picked up the two survivors. Vocalo's Steve Walsh updates the story on Vocalo today-- and he's got the 911 tape.
Plus a report from Samie about the attention she's gotten as a teen Internet star-- not all of it so welcome. And of course, "The Children Are Our Future," from Young Chicago Authors.
And more of your stuff: A new track from HipHop, reports from the Kane County Flea Market, a new installment from Outside the Loop Radio, and a proposal from SpentCattle: If Chicago gets the Olympics, we should demand that political corruption be added as an Olympic sport.
Plus: Robin brings us a story about a new Chicago law that could make some free newspapers into, um, criminal enterprises.
