The Rundown
Today’s Sun-Times has the story of a local millionaire who just pled guilty to money-laundering— caught in an FBI sting—which made us ask:
- Hey, how does this money-laundering thing work, anyway?
- The FBI apparently asked this guy to “wash” what it said was $80,000 in drug money. Isn’t that entrapment? (If so, it’s not the dirtiest FBI trick in memory—in the early 1990s, for Operation Silver Shovel, the FBI actually dumped illegal-- and possibly hazardous?-- waste in some Black and Latino Chicago neighborhoods, in order to sting a few City Council members.)
- There are some wild stories out there of people outwitting Internet scammers. Robin has one about a guy who got one of them to make elaborate wood carvings… twice. Have you got another one?
Oh, and we’ll check in on the R. Kelly trial. Annnnd... is the CTA screwing the West Side on purpose or what?
