Who is SisterLove? The short answer is, "SisterLove, Inc. is the first and oldest community based non-profit in Georgia (USA) to focus specifically upon the needs of women, particularly African American women and those of African descent, who are at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and infections."

What is "SisterLove: Keeping it Real, Globally!"? It is the first long-form audio documentary produced by up-and-coming audio documentarian, Noah Chandler. He is a recent graduate of the fledgling master's program - Social Documentation - at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

The voices of women and people of color are often placed far down on the agenda in "globalization" debates -- especially when it comes to finding alternative realities (read: solutions). By looking at the work of the Atlanta-based organization SisterLove, this project seeks to document and give an example of progressive social justice organizing and more importantly to challenge who it is we look to for solutions.

"SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally!" puts forward the voices of small group of African-American women in seeking to answer the question: How do localized organizations, in the face of globalization and neo-liberalism, move beyond insular and service model structures to effectively integrate regional and global organizing?

This project is a proposed 3-chapter series that is being wholly produced and edited by first time audio producer Noah Chandler. Module 1 covers the local Atlanta efforts of SisterLove; Module 2 covers SisterLove's global efforts and follows them to South Africa where they have purchased a working farm as part of their crusade for sexual and reproductive justice; Module 3 will travel back to Atlanta and offer analysis of global organizing and summarizing this issue using SisterLove's efforts as a focal point. Module 1(18 minutes long) is complete and as of today has been released in smaller parts to national radio programs such as the National Radio Project's "Making Contact."

Stylistically, "SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally" seeks to break free of some of the dominant constraints found in the majority of work that is heard on public radio today. It is narrator free. Music plays a dominant role and lends a more cinematic feel to the project. A hope is that these changes of style might appeal more to an audience that is less attracted to the more rigidly produced pieces that are most often aired. But most of all, it's what I would like to hear when I listen to audio documentary.
