William Upski Wimsatt is a political organizer. His newest book, Please Don't Bomb the Suburbs, asks what it means for a youth activist to grow up in America. The title is a riff on his 1990s cult classic book, Bomb the Suburbs, about race, graffiti and the benefits of urban living.

Here at the station yesterday, we were having an all-staff meeting.  About halfway through I saw Ammad Omar, the news desk editor at WBEZ, sneak out.  Then less than a minute later another person, then another.  Then Steve Edwards came in and took 3 more people.  After 5 minutes the meeting was half empty.  Then someone shares that Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced was not going to seek re-election and 6 more people got up and left.  This is a big deal for Chicago and everyone knows it. Hit the jump for the list.

Silhavey: Maru EP - the debut EP from a new Chicago band

Silhavey is a brand new band on the Chicago scene, and with their debut EP Maru, they promise to deliver an exciting new sound to the area. The first track on Maru, called "Brother Man," starts off with a bang. With an urgent guitar riff, they inform us right away, "you gotta decide." As the song unfolds, the music highlights the tension in a sibling rivalry, culminating in the resolution of family familiarity.
