A Sense of Belonging: Life at Northwestern's MOSAIC Co-Op

Members of Society Acting in Cooperation (MOSAIC) is celebrating 10 years in Evanston. While not officially affiliated with Northwestern University, it is the only co-op that serves students of the school. Just two blocks from campus, the big house draws undergraduates, graduates, and even members of the community at large. Vegetarian and vegan meals are prepared for everyone, and many student groups host their events at the house. In this audio documentary produced by Julia Gabel, Zach Spear, and Kayla Webley, and voiced by Kayla Webley, members of MOSAIC describe what it's like to be "a community of misfits."

At some point in life, most of us have felt the cold, sharp insecurity of being an outsider. Butterflies in the stomach, the heart starts to beat faster, your eyes dart around hoping to recognize someone, anyone, to latch onto. Starting life on a college campus can heighten all of this, which may be why so many students are drawn to the dorms or Greek system as a way to create a sense of community. For the 13 members of the Mosaic co-op at Northwestern University, community came in the form of a big, old house.
